This rock formation is called Eyjan, which means “the island”, and hikers often travel to its topmost parts to behold the magnificent views of the surrounding area. The canyon has a woodland made up of mostly birch and willow trees. Other tree species that can be found in the wood are larch, pine and fir. There is also a small lake named Botnstjörn where different kinds of water fowls make their home. According to local legend, Asbyrgi canyon is the capital city of the huldufólk, or the hidden people. They are said to live in the cracks found within the cliffs of the canyon.
